river

every morning the river’s face opens with the sun’s
long rooted histories grown at the edge
and mountains above us

wet sand loud like the voice of many hundreds
a circle target and mashed fingers like
april is tomorrow.

super-sized deities and magnifying glasses to their lungs
a withering black iris on either side of their chests
-swimming is a chore and so is the river.
